MEET THE CHARACTERS


If anyone should ask: Potassium is a very important mineral that helps to maintain a healthy heart. It’s a fact: Bananas contain Vitamin C and the Vitamin B6 that can contribute to a healthy skin. Bananas can also provide lots of energy and dietary Fibre. However, you need to eat them regularly to obtain all of these benefits.

It’s a fact: Cucumbers contain just small amounts of Vitamins and Minerals but they are very versatile in their uses and are a most refreshing and decorative addition to a variety of recipes, dishes and drinks. If anyone should ask: The song “Teddy Bear” was a big hit for the great Elvis Presley and reached number 3 in the UK charts in 1957.

It’s a fact: Carrots contain Vitamin B & Vitamin A which apparently helps with night vision! “Well, when did you ever see a Rabbit with a Torch? Huh!

It’s a fact: All Fruit and Vegetables are vitally important to your every day health and in all stages of your life. However, possibly the most important Vegetable is Broccoli. Broccoli is very rich in Vitamin E – Iron & Potassium. It is also claimed that it has preventative healing qualities. The Pen may be mightier than the Sword, but Broccoli is a very powerful protector – so please eat lots of this regularly.

It’s a fact: An average sized Orange contains more than twice the amount of Vitamin C that is required for our recommended daily intake. Oranges also have a reputation in being helpful towards preventing colds. “Well, when was the last time you saw an Orange sneeze? Huh!”

It’s a fact: Mainly all Fruit and Vegetables contain the dietary Fibre that is so essential to the everyday workings of parts of our bodies – Pears are delicious and although they contain only small amounts of Vitamins and Minerals they do provide an excellent source of Fibre. If anyone should ask: ‘It is much safer to go around in Pears’ – Get it? In Pairs! Oh! Suit yourself!

It’s a fact: Tomatoes are highly nutritious and are considered a Fruit that offers a good source of Vitamin C - although, apparently, Cherry Tomatoes contain a higher level of Vitamin C. Anyway, whatever, Tomatoes are good for you in also providing some Vitamin E and dietary Fibre.

If anyone should ask: ‘Tripping the Light Fandango’ is an expression meaning to have fun, to laugh, to dance and celebrate! It’s a fact: A ‘Fandango’ is a Spanish Dance. A ‘Tango’ is also a very energetic Latin - American style of Dance & Mangoes contain Vitamin C.

It’s a fact: Figs contain lots of Vitamins and it is believed humans could live on figs alone! It is a very healthy fruit and apparently you can eat as many of them as you wish! Greek athletes were advised to eat lots of Figs for energy and stamina!

It’s a fact: Asparagus is rich in Vitamin E and dietary Fibre. It also contains Vitamin B and loads of Vitamin C. Asparagus is really good for you!

It’s a fact: Potatoes provide lots of Vitamin and Minerals!

It’s a fact: Chicory is considered to be a Herb and a Vegetable. Its Leaves are also a delicious addition to Salads. There is actually a Coffee made from Chicory! If anyone should ask: Chicory dates back 4000 years and was referred to in the days of Cleopatra and Napoleon. Chicory has been highly praised for its medicinal-like effect on the digestive system.

If anyone should ask: Apparently, the vegetable Marrow does not provide any real nutritious or dietary Fibre benefits. However, it can be a delicious addition to many recipes in the same manner as Pumpkins and Cucumbers because they are all related. It would be great fun to try and grow a massive Marrow and enter it into a competition. You might even win a prize!

It’s a fact: An Apple provides a quarter of your daily Vitamin C requirement. It also contains a Mineral called Boron that helps keep bones strong and healthy. Apples contain many qualities to help keep you healthy and it has been said that they contribute towards healthy looking hair and clear skin. “Well, when was the last time you saw an Apple with spots?”

It’s a fact: Passion Fruit is an excellent source of Vitamin C and dietary Fibre. It also contains Vitamin B Complex and more Iron than most Fruits.

It’s a fact: The Avocado provides lots of dietary Fibre and is a good source of Vitamin B6. This Vitamin is beneficial in providing energy to the body as well as a healthy skin. It also greatly assists the ‘nervous system’ and is believed to have healing qualities.

It’s a fact: Onions contain small quantities of Vitamins and Minerals as well as a contributing Fibre content. However, Onions are an excellent source of Vitamin C – plus they contain some Vitamin A in their green tops. Onions make your eyes water when you open them or peel them and it can appear as if you are crying.

If anyone should ask: ‘Emperor Nero’ became a ruler of the Roman Empire when he was still in his teens. It’s a fact: A Podium is something that people stand upon so that they are higher up than everyone else. Winners are invited to stand on Podiums so that they can be clearly seen by the crowds when they receive their prizes and sometimes a ‘Crown’ of Laurel leaves would have been placed on their heads – This was a very Roman thing!

It’s a fact: Four whole Strawberries contain as much Vitamin C as an Orange! Wow! That’s amazing! They also taste fantastic!

It’s a fact: Lemons contain Vitamin C. The juice from a Lemon with a spoonful of Honey mixed together in hot (but not too hot) water and sipped slowly can really help soothe a sore throat – this not exactly a cure but it really does help you and of course Vitamin C helps to fight colds and flu.

It’s a fact: Leeks contain the Vitamins C – B1 & B6. They are also rich in Iron and dietary Fibre.

The last time I was here was in 1945 when there was a dreadful food shortage and I had to remind everyone to go back to basics and grow their own Vegetables, Salad items and whatever Fruit was possible in their particular climate. I advised them to find a nice corner of their garden where they could begin their own Vegetable and Herb patch.
